U9 SPL Senior Cup Final
Woking Cougars VS Frimley Green Rhinos
Sunday 29th March 09
So we are all set for the Senior Cup Final against Bedfont Green when on the Friday night at training ‘The Cod’ announces that we will be playing Frimley Green Rhinos in the Cup Final and not Bedfont. This we are led to believe is due to the ineligibility of three of Bedfonts players and also due to the fact that they played ten minutes too much extra time in the Semi Final and only the best of three and not five penalties. Sounds like they have got their own ‘Team Lawyer’ and he’s bent as well.
We rock up to Villa ‘Varsity Centre’ Park for the lunchtime showdown that will determine the best Cup team in the land. ‘Mrs Fluffy’ makes a rare appearance at the request of our No 10 to cheer the boys on and to make sure that ‘Mr Fluff’ has enough lead in his pencil.
‘Cod & Chips’ are preparing the boys for the hard physical battle that lay ahead for the next hour. The Frimley team looks as though they have had more than their fair share of shredded wheat and where looking at Xav and thinking hhhmmm lunch. The opposition were to say the least massive and the boys knew that this was going to be messy ala (Judith ‘Simon’ Chalmers) on a one man mission at an Xmas beano.
The ‘Team Lawyer’ was relieved of his duties today as the referee today was supplied courtesy of the SPL, so at least we were in for an impartial afternoon at least. ‘The Lawyer’ instead found comfort, solace and loneliness in the form of a tent!!!!....... that provided freshly cooked burgers, hot dogs, teas, coffees and chocolate. Never mind I am sure that he will be given that one last chance he so craves to rectify all of his faults. Bless him. The kick off was delayed due to the Cougars U10’s adding more silverware to the trophy cabinet and winning their Cup competition on penalties. Well done lads, now it was down to our boys.
The crowd was building and the tension rising, it was becoming unbearable; I could feel it in my pencil. The ‘Fluffmeister’ was itching and the ‘Lawyer’ was eating. The pre-match nerves were setting in. Come on ref lets get cracking. No sooner said than done and the 2009 Senior U9 Cup Final was under way.
The starting line up was Jamie in goal, Adam and his Ant (Xav) at the back, Ethan, Stef & Lewis in midfield with James up front. The boys started quite brightly and put the first attacking move together almost immediately with Lewis at the centre of it but firing just wide. An early warning for the Rhinos. From this though the boys struggled to get into their rhythm and the first half came and went very quickly and fortunately the Rhinos could not capitalise on this 0-0.
Time for the interval. Popcorn all round followed by ice cream!!!! ‘Lady Stanford’ this week had delegated oranges to Laurent ‘Switch it’ Parker who managed to get it right at the second attempt, fortunately there was a Tesco’s opposite, otherwise half time sustenance would have been as absent as a Hobbsy cry of ‘It’s my round’
‘Ronnie & Reggie’ were beating up the troops at half time, trying to get some steel & resolve (Debbie has got plenty of these and usually takes them on a Sunday morning) into their game because at the moment the boys were being out muscled. Ethan’s gym work was not proving to be enough and it was quite obvious that they were going to have to mix it up a bit in the second half. Stef, Ethan and Benito had risen from their death beds to play in the final having gone down with a virus that was circulating so it was always going to be slightly more difficult, but they were not going to miss it for the world.
‘The Cod’ made a couple of changes and it was time for the entrance of ‘Super Dan’, Benito & ‘Eh Samwell ahh good shot Samwell’ (said in a heavy Latin accent) to make an entrance with Lewis, Stef and Xav having a breather.
The second half was under way and again Frimley were mainly first to the ball and battling for everything. The boys were trying to get their passing game together but at this point they were finding it difficult. The Frimley No 9 was very generous though and every time he got near the ball he was penalised. All of a sudden though the boys found themselves behind when Frimley managed to poke the ball into the net and at this point I don’t think anyone watching would disagree that the better team so far were leading 0-1.
The boys needed rallying and back on went Xav and Lewis. It was evident they were going to put the parents through the mill rather than turn up and kill the game instantly to put us out of our misery. And so it proved and with the clock ticking away they started to find their feet. Searching for the equaliser the ball at last was finding its way up front and we started to look threatening.
Ethan was finding more space down the left and the same for Lewis on the right. Sam in the middle had managed to stamp his authority on the game and provided the grit required in the centre of midfield to halt any Frimley advances and at the same time looking to get the ball forward. ‘Tom & Jerry’ at the back were cleaning up all that came their way and Jamie was as dependable as ever between the sticks. The parents on the other hand were becoming more & more concerned as the clock ticked down to inside the last five minutes and still no breakthrough. Frimley’s No 9 again was penalised for a challenge on Lewis and the resultant free kick was swung into the box, where the ball was scrambling around until James put his boot through it and the relief, ecstasy and the roar 1-1 and we are right back in it. The momentum was with us now and from here on in, there was only going to be one team that was going to win it.
The full time whistle goes and it was a quick turn around for extra time and dare I say it penalties. The first period of extra time gets under way and the Cougars have their tales up. Mid way through this period James hits the cross bar and Frimley legs are beginning to tire. The two wide midfielders of Ethan & Lewis with James up front are beginning to sense this and are taking full advantage. Half time of extra time, again a straight turn around and the boys are looking for the winner and they did not have to wait long. Ethan releases James down the left and on the edge of the box James twists & turns and shoots. The goalkeeper dives but is nowhere near and the ball rebounds agonisingly off the far post where Lewis is waiting and wallop 2-1. At this point the ‘Team Lawyer’ is being mounted by ‘Fluffy’ the Mums on the other side of the pitch look like they are about to give birth and the Frimley players are staring into the sky with their hands on the back of their heads thinking
Two minutes later James scores again when the ball rebounds into the back of the net off the top part of his shoulder, but the referee spares the Frimley players any more heartache by dis-allowing a perfectly good goal (independent and impartial witness statements taken from two Meadow Sports Dads standing directly behind the goal). The game ends and yet again we are Champions following on from last season’s tournaments and tour.
Not bad for a “girls team that plays in a girls league” to quote some of the Frimley players who had not taken the result very ‘magnificently’ at all. We will see you next season in the “girls league”.
Final Score: Woking Cougars 2 Frimley Green Rhinos 1
The boys were presented with the trophy and their winner’s medals and back to the club house it was to celebrate our latest victory with a few jars and a sing song. It just goes to prove that you don’t always have a good day in the office but quality always shines through. Mind over matter etc etc etc. COUGAAAAAAAAAAARS.
Manager’s Quote: ‘Outstanding team performance, well done to the boys’.
Coaches Quote: ‘An outstanding game. The boys really know how to dig deep when it matters most. They should all be proud of themselves’.
Man of the Match – Everyone Goals – James & Lewis
Best Effort – The Team
