Under 9 SPL Div 3
Cougars Youth 1 Beaulieu Rockets 3
We welcomed Rockets to West End in a vital game for both teams in their respective promotion bids. Although the boys were in 6th place going into this game they only trailed second place by 4 pts and with all the teams above them having to play each other second place was certainly not out of the question.
Games between these two teams are normally very competitive and played in a great spirit.
The game kicked off and for once we got off to a fast start within seconds a high looping ball was played into the Rockets area, Chris showing great determination won the first ball and then reacted well to win the second ball which with a well placed header found the goal. 1-0 to Cougars. We looked to add a second goal; we went close with a high looping shot from Jack. Archie burst through the middle but had his shot well saved. Jack then connected with a diving header that just went over. At the other end we looked well in control Ben only called into action once with a good save from a high shot. Half time and we led 1-0 and at this stage looked very much in control.
The second half started and as expected Rockets came out strong. Rockets started to press us putting the defence under pressure. Ben was called into action several times. The Rockets pressure finally told when a Cougars defender lost the flight of a high ball in the sun; a Rocket’s forward pounced on it and fired home past Ben. A second goal for Rockets soon followed when a hopeful forward ball from the Rockets wasn’t dealt with gifting Rockets a goal. With time running out we had a good chance to equalise, some good passing between Chris, Archie and Jack left Chris with a chance but he shot wide. With the ref about to blow for time Rockets added a flattering third with a powerful shot from the right which left Ben with no chance.
Not for the first time this season the boys lost a game that on their first half performance they really should have got something from. In the second half several of them just didn’t put the effort in and against a good team like Rocket’s you will get punished.
Man of the match went to Archie who yet again ran himself into the ground. Best effort went to Paolo.
Ben, Charlie, Luke, Callum, Jack, Benito, Paolo, Chris (1) & Archie.
