Abbey Rangers VS Woking Cougars
Sunday 19th April 09
A short trip to Addlestone was on the agenda this lovely sunny morning for our last league game of the season. Fluffy’s legs were on display for all the attending Mum’s and he did not disappoint. ‘The Codfather’ was inconspicuous by his absence due to a pressing engagement in North London which quite frankly, as it turned out was absolutely appalling. The man at the helm this morning and responsible for the little Hash Browns was ‘Enid Sharpels’ himself ‘El Carey’ and he was looking to build upon his 100% record as sole Manager without the interference of the ‘Team Tightwad’.
Abbey went one better than the burger van, they had an entire clubhouse full of grub and as soon as we turned up the ‘Team Lawyer’, ‘Lord Stanford’ and the ‘Team Loin’ disappeared with only the soles of their shoes visible over the counter, where the scram was served. It makes you wonder if they get fed at home. Still no ‘Tour Rules’ despite constant badgering from the Management so surely there is the first fine of the up and coming weekend.
‘Enid’ preps the boys for kick off and just as we are about to start our Spanish singing sensation ‘Manual Iglesias’ turns up to give us a fifty minute rendition of his favourite covers such as ‘Ah goode eshot James’ and ‘pass de ball Samwell’. The boys feel like they are playing in front of the Kop with all the singing going on from the sides so off we go.
The line up is Jamie in goal, Ethan and the Earthworm at the back, Stef, Lewis and Sam in the middle and James up front. Dan was sub, rearing to go and Adam was being subjected to an afternoon of misery watching Everton. AAAAHHHHHHHH
The first five minutes were nip and tuck, with Abbey strong down the left and it was a frenetic match with both teams attacking and it was end to end stuff. The breakthrough came after fifteen minutes when Bernie received the ball and checked on to his right then his left and unleashed a whopper from just inside our half. It was an exocet and probably the best goal scored against us this season 1-0.
Looking for the equaliser the Cougars started to dominate and five minutes before the break James shackles free from his marker and with the goalie advancing of his line coolly slots the ball past him into the net 1-1. Lewis and Dan both went close just before the break but it was time for the oranges supplied by me, the one and only legend that is ‘Johnny Magic’. Laced with my specially produced rocket fuel to ignite the boys for the 2nd half, the boys munched away whilst ‘Enid’ gave his half time chat.
The boys looked lively at kick off for the 2nd half and not their usual lethargic selves which they usually are following a Hobbsy pep talk and like the rest of us whilst we are waiting for him to get them in. ‘El Carey’ made some tactical changes to try and contain Bernie and almost immediately we found ourselves 2-1 down when the aforementioned struck a left foot shot from inside the box across goal and into the net. Jamie was unsighted for the shot and could not do anything about it.
Unfazed they went looking for the equaliser and every single member of the team fought and challenged for every ball that came their way. Xav and Ethan at the back, swept all before them and they held firm and were superb.
The midfield of Sam, Dan, Lewis and Stef battled and won everything in the middle. Sam was keeping Bernie quiet and Dan was pushing forward supporting James at every opportunity with Stef and Lewis bossing the game. The boys mounted wave after wave of attacks, Lewis was firing them in from all angles and Abbey did not know what had hit them. James was chasing and harrying and it was a lovely move started by Lewis and Stef that led to the ball being knocked up to James who with one simple pass, took out the defender and laid the ball into the onrushing Sam who shot into the far corner 2-2.
The boys were not done yet and with Lewis going close the boys continued to press and with Dan dispossessing Bernie he laid the ball up to James, left foot, wallop and bang 2-3.
With ten minutes left James was searching for his hat trick but unfortunately it was not to be and the Ref blew the whistle to signal the end of our league campaign for this season and a respectable 4th place finish in the Premier League with a Senior Cup win thrown in to boot just for good measure. Eat that Mayford, what did you win??
With ‘Enid’ still unbeaten in sole charge and with a 100% win record the next few days may pose questions with regards to the Manager’s position. I can only report what is out there but surely there must be some mileage in this and no doubt it will come up several times on Tour, unless through liquid refreshment he can persuade us otherwise. An enthralling match to end a fine season, roll on the tournaments.
It is at this point that I am hanging up my pencil; however I will provide a Tour report following the festivities that lay ahead. It will be a strength and testament to every marriage that is going on Tour, and I will feedback honestly and accordingly on these matters and of course all footballing issues also. Adios.
COUGAAAAAAAAAAARS.
Final Score: Abbey Rangers 2 Woking Cougars 3
Manager’s Quote: ‘Err, up the Toffees’.
Coaches Quote: ‘Great determination & some good football by all the boys. A fantastic end to the season’.
Man of the Match – Stef Goals – James (2) & Sam
Best Effort – The Team
