The Cougars weren’t distracted by the delayed kick off for their graded match with Windlesham Wasps on Sunday. And it was in fact the Cougars who were buzzing from the first whistle. The early midfield battles were all being won by Fabio,Manuel,,Liam,Tom and Joshua with all making sure they were first to the loose ball. The Cougars early pressure led to a corner which Tom raced over to take. His wicked in-swinger seemed to deceive the windlesham keeper and he was only successful in parrying into his own net to put the Cougars 1 up. The Cougars could have increased their lead in the 8th minute, Fabio burst clear down the Windlesham right, he then beat 2 players and found himself one on one with the advancing keeper he cut further inside and was unlucky not to get his shot away .
The Wasps were now finding it difficult to match the Cougars pace and strength, with William ,Manuel, Fabio, Oliver, making sure that the ball stayed in Windlesham territory. A neat pass in midfield from Liam found Fabio who himself side-stepped a defender and slid a perfectly weighted pass into Tom’s path his first time drive, look destined for the bottom corner, but was palmed away by the windlesham keeper .
Callum was also causing problems by taking up good positions and pressurising the Wasps defence constantly. Joshua nearly benefited from the hardwork but was closed down in front of goal just when poised to shoot, but the ball ran wide and Callum was first to react , kept the ball in play , and cut the ball back to Oliver who steadied himself before firing narrowly over. The Cougars continued to dominate and a series of corners from Tom gave the wasps further cause for concern, with Fabio, Joshua, Callum, all unlucky not to connect as the ball flew frequently across the wasps goalmouth . Liam also showed good control down the left with a powerful run he then checked back inside which wrong footed 3 windlesham players and then played in Callum who was tackled well just as he was about to pull the trigger.
In the Cougars goal Emilio kicked well from his hands and was mostly untroubled with only neat back passes from William Fabio and Liam to deal with . He was called upon close to half time though, he reacted smartly and dived bravely at the feet of a Windlesham attacker to gather the ball, only to take a nasty bang on his head for his efforts.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Manuel, William, Oliver , Tom, Liam and Fabio closing the Windlesham players down quickly and snapping into tackles. Only last ditch defending prevented the cougars from increasing their lead.. A deep high cross from Fabio was just to long for Liam , further long range efforts from Tom and Liam were well struck but straight at the keeper, Joshua, Oliver, Callum and Fabio were also close from the vital touch on several occasions..
Although completely in control the Cougars could not increase their lead and were left to rue their earlier missed chances. With seconds remaining the Wasps eventually found their Sting. A windlesham midfielder controlled well from a kick out and moved swiftly with the ball into a shooting position. He then let fly with a right foot shot that bounced wickedly in front of Emilio and nestled into the bottom corner of the cougars net. Although the strike earned the Windlesham Wasps an undeserving draw, the cougars can be very proud of their performance .
