The Cougars were quickly in their stride, and were bearing down on the Chertsey goal within seconds of the kick off.Neat work from Fabio, played in Joshua who in turn found Callum he pulled the ball back to liam who unleashed a ferocious shot that the Chertsey keeper could only watch crash against his left hand upright, and then be scrambled clear for a cougars corner.
Liam took it quickly and short to Tom who fired in an equally as strong effort but an Chertsey defender bravely put his head to the ball on the goal line and to safety.
The Chertsey defence was under intense pressure, with Callum reacting first to a cross from Fabio but the keeper saved with his legs and again covering defenders scrambled the ball away to half way but Joshua tigerishly won the ball and found Alex who controlled well, made ground and released Tom down the left, who decided to try his luck from long range, but his effort was blocked and fell to Liam 18yards out, he rode a challenge and drilled a low shot across the keeper but again the frame of the goal came to his rescue.
Further corners from Tom and Liam caused more danger for Chertsey... First Joshua’s close range effort was blocked on the line, and Fabio thought he broke the deadlock when nipping in at the front post only to see his goal bound effort again cleared from the goal line.
It only seemed a matter of time before the Cougars took the lead , but it was the visitors that broke away and opened the scoring after a lucky deflected shot trickled into the cougars net giving Emilio no chance..
Normal service resumed with the cougars playing some scintillating football a one two between Callum and Tom lead to Callum through on goal but the Chertsey Keeper managed to save his powerful shot..
The home side continued to dominant with Alex, Fabio, Joshua, tom and Liam all preventing Chertsey from crossing half way and ensuring that Emilio was a virtual spectator in the Cougars Goal.
The pressure was incessant, but Chertsey continued to put their bodies on the line to preserve their slender lead, but they were finally undone with a magical strike from Liam on the stroke of half time. Fabio flew into a block tackle to win the ball on halfway and fed the ball to Liam wide on the left he skipped around a covering defender and from distance and on the angle unleashed an unstoppable shot that flew across the keeper and into the top corner. This was just reward for what was cougar’s best half of football of the season.
The second half saw Chertsey threaten from the kick off and Emilio was called upon early to save smartly from a low shot. They were now looking more threatening and it was the cougars that had to defend well from 2 corners back to back. Emilio then had to bravely dive at the feet of the Chertsey striker to deny them retaking the lead.
The Cougars could not match their first half performance and struggled to create many meaningful chances. Neat work from Joshua played a nice pass to Tom who combined well with Callum after being released down the right Tom then pulled the ball back for Callum who timed his run to perfection but his shot unluckily went just the wrong side of the upright.
The remainder of the second half was contested in Midfield with neither team making much head way. But with the game drawing to a close and looking like both teams would share the spoils. One of the goals of the season was scored.
With seconds remaining Liam’s way forward down the left was blocked with another a familiar Chertsey tackle , but the ball ran loose and bounced around unattended for a few seconds just inside the visitors half .. Alex was first to react and instinctively struck a missile of a shot that stayed 3 feet off the ground for its entire journey , and flew into the net, giving the Chertsey keeper absolutely no chance …
It was a goal worthy to win any match and a great way to sign off for the season.
